Hey guys! Today I have my first guest blogger for my
It is Heather from

Summer is in full swing around here and I am definitely taking advantage of it! Unfortunately I am still in the "healing" process from my unfortunate run-in with the cliff (check out my blog for that story)...so I haven't done much more than lay around the house. The good news is I have gotten quite a few things prepared for the start of the school year...yes I know this one JUST ended...but I am going stir crazy at home!
So when Amber over at "Adventures of a Third Grade Teacher" mentioned that she was going to do a Summer Spotlight Series I jumped at the chance. Not only do I have a little extra time on my hands, but I figured it would be a great way to get to know other bloggers and hopefully share some fun ideas with everyone in blogland.
However, I am what you would call Type A, particular, picky, a perfectionist or whatever word you can find to describe someone who stresses over things being perfect...so now that it is my turn to be a guest blogger and "spotlight" my blog...I am stuck!
This has to be my BEST post yet because hopefully a lot of people will be reading it. This immediately puts me into panic/writer's block mode!! So...here goes nothing!
After making the big move from 5th grade to 3rd grade, I attempted to take some of my book report projects and alter them to make them 3rd grade friendly. One of my favorite book reports was our biography book report. In 5th grade they would put on a wax museum in the library for their parents to come in and see. I knew that I definitely wanted my 3rd graders to do a biography, but I also knew I couldn't do wax museum. It is something they look forward to in 5th grade and I couldn't take that excitement away.
After some thought we decided to do soda pop bottle biographies. Instead of dressing up as the person they chose, the kids took 2-liter soda bottles and turned them into the person they read about. These turned out better than I could have imagined! I was leery at first bringing book reports into 3rd grade but after each book report I was more and more blown away by their abilities! If you would like a FREE copy of the note taking sheet I gave my kids while they read there book you can get it HERE and below I posted some pictures of the finished products from my kids this year :)
Ella Fitzgerald
Cleopatra
Picasso
This little gem of Abe Lincoln kept me awake at night...his lifesize head was something the whole class couldn't help but laugh at!
If you are looking for any more freebies feel free to check out my blog Third Grade Is a "Hoot" or my TPT store. I am hoping to get some more freebies posted during all my free time this summer!!
I love those bottles, don't you? I can't believe how real that Abe looks!
Thanks Heather!

Oh my goodness, these are great!!! OK, this may be a silly question but do you have directions on how to make the bottles or is it completely up to the creativity of the students/parents? I would love to hear more about these!!!
ReplyDeleteP.S. you did an awesome job on your summer spotlight today!!!
Thank you!!
DeleteAs far as directions on how to make the bottles we showed the kids and parents a few examples and then left the rest up to them! I find that sometimes when they don't have guidelines they end up doing better...I was absolutely pleased with the way the projects turned out!

Fun in Room 4B
Great point about not wanting to give too many guidelines on the bottle people-this could stifle the creativity. I can't wait to try this with my own class. Given my school's population I am wondering what if any of the supplies that I would need to provide? Thanks again for the great idea, now I need to get started on my example bottle person :)
ReplyDeleteWe do a similar biography report in 3rd grade at my school. We tried a wax museum this year. I'm not so sure I'd do it again, we don't really have the appropriate space for it, and they were worn out afterwards. It may be more appropriate for older kids. Love the saddle bottles though, they are too cute!
ReplyDeleteOne question though, do you have the kids read one particular book for information about their person? We just had them doing internet and research with several books. But I like the idea of them reading an entire kid friendly biography on someone.
Adventures in Room 5
Since we did this early in the year I had them read just one kid friendly biography...later in the year we introduced research projects and internet research.
DeleteVery cute idea! The soda bottle "people" turned out great!

I would also like to know if they just did research via the internet or if they read kid friendly bios. I love them.
ReplyDeleteThose are hilarious! Glad to have found your blog! I'm a new follower :) Looking forward to following you:)
